Fiber as an immune system booster

Flohsamenschalen Psyllium

We have already discussed the possible negative consequences of an excessive dosage of antioxidants which can negatively influence the desired training effects ( here is the article ).

Given these findings, the question arises as to how the immune system can be supported during intense training phases. It is precisely during these intense training phases that the immune system is extremely vulnerable. During these phases, athletes often experience injuries and illnesses that can be attributed to a weak immune system response.

This is where our T helper cells (CD4+ T cells) come into play. T cells, in general, are specialized cells of the immune system that play a central role in defending against pathogens and regulating the immune response. T helper cells activate other immune cells such as B cells and macrophages by releasing cytokines, promote the formation of antibodies, and coordinate the humoral and cellular immune response. They are therefore important helpers of our immune system.

A 2023 study on the influence of a high-fiber diet found that a low-fiber diet weakens these T helper cells in particular, thus suppressing the immune system. In contrast, increasing the fiber content leads to an improvement in the immune system even after just a few days (link to the study) .

Soluble fiber is fermented by intestinal bacteria and produces short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate, which have anti-inflammatory effects and serve as an energy source for T helper cells.

Conclusion: By consuming fiber, athletes can actively support the immune system, especially, but not only, during periods of intense training, and are not dependent on the use of other antioxidants in increased doses (over 30mg vitamin E and 250mg vitamin C).

Psyllium (psyllium seed husk) is fermented in the large intestine by the intestinal flora, producing short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate. Compared to other soluble fibers, psyllium ferments relatively slowly. This slow fermentation has the advantage of causing fewer side effects such as bloating or abdominal pain, which can occur with faster-fermenting fibers. That's why we use psyllium in our SportBrennstoff ERHOLUNG (3g per serving).
